Hero's Journey is the unpublished cards from Arnell's first deck and is the older, wilder sister to Transformational Tarot. The collage art combines contemporary imagery with old world art. This is a full size, 78 card handmade deck with signed book, signature card, and handcrafted, collaged box. The original cards were done by hand with a pair of cuticle scissors, glue stick and stacks of art books, old comics, greeting cards and magazines. It takes a full week to make this set. The cards are color copied off the original collages, cut out and individually pasted onto the specially designed backs and trimmed. They are then cut, laminated and trimmed a final time. This is a time consuming process and the reason for the high cost of the set.

New Hero's Journey One of a Kind Handcrafted Boxes as of 2010

In an effort to make this deck set a bit more affordable, while keeping the look fresh and unique, a new box style is offered. These new handcrafted boxes feature 3 cards from this deck with different background art papers which compliment the deck art featured (3 versions shown below). Each box is a one of a kind artwork signed by Arnell. The box has a smaller art work fastened on top, (collage on thick cardstock to give it more dimension). The inside top of the box also has Hero's Journey card which has been collaged onto thick cardstock. There is art from a 3rd card featured on the bottom inside of the box. The top and bottom of these boxes are larger than the center section, giving it added distinction. And the bottom of the box has 4 polished glass shoes. These new boxes are quite charming and each one is an original artwork in itself. To celebrate this new style of box, the Hero's Journey set will now be $15. less (than their original $200. price) until further notice. Yay!
It's been 15 years since Hero's Journey was created, so Arnell spent a few months rescanning each handmade card and refining the collage detail in Photoshop in the hopes of offering a higher quality version of this deck without altering the original collage concepts. The spiral bound booklet has a streamline look and thumbnail pictures of all the cards. All artwork is handcrafted by Arnell from start to finish.

In Spring of 2006, Hero's Journey was exhibited at Roskilde Museum, in Denmark as representing the beginning of a handmade, personal collage deck era, (along with K. Frank Jensen's very impressive, enormous and historical Tarot deck collection). Here are a couple photos of the H. J. showcase.
