Hugo Vermeulen had the aim to create a tarot deck where the minor arcana illustrates a rite or a way of
initiation. He sees the minor arcana as the road one has to follow towards initiation, a kind of "rite de
passage", or the striving for mastering the "Royal Art" ... since he who does so, has the ability to
master the 22 forces, represented in the major arcana.... In his deck Vermeulen linked the symbolism of
the initiation to the goddess Diana ...in honor of the Ages that blunt all but the hoof prints of the
Maiden's mount that rushes by....
Vermeulen claims, that by choosing a card from the major arcana in accordance with the reader's aim,
it symbolizes the reason for the reader's initiation path through the minor arcana. By choosing one or
more minor arcana cards at random, the reader will get an idea of the level he or she has reached in
the process of initiation.
Vermeulen's minor arcana is a representation of Diana's quadruple path through the nine worlds, in which
each are guarded by an animal, which Diana constrains by using her nine clothes. Vermeulens explanation of
his deck is short and leaves much to the readers interpretation; he only gives a keyword explanation of
the single cards in diagram form. The artwork of the deck is exiting, but has most likely lost a lot in
the printing. The black and white etchings came out of the printing process quite black, where the originals
most likely showed details. The box is what I call a hard box; heavy cardboard, and covered with black linen.
Closed with straps. Attractive handwork.
