Bologna Tarot's Signed & Numbered Title Card
Back in 1986, Tarocchi di Bologna was reprinted with great care by Il Meneghello, but sadly that lovely version went out of print. Osvaldo Menegazzi however, gave his blessings for Hermatena (the Tarot Museum) to reproduce special, limited editions of both a Large and Standard size in their own unique fashion. With the larger set; card images are much bigger than any other available version: 7.5 x 3.75 inches (18.5 x 9.5 cm.) and are mounted on colored cardstock. I wonder if this was intended as a tool for ritual, meditation or teaching; rather than for reading cards (for studying their ancient symbology and contemplating subtle nuances that such a size makes possible). The title card is fastened on top of a ribbed, corrugated box along with the Tarot Museum's hot wax seal. This deluxe version is a small production, available directly from Museo dei Tarocchi.

The first standard set Hermantena produced (in 2013), was 4 x 6 in. (10 x 15 cm) and had a matte cardstock. A standard neutral border surrounded the card image (like the current version does), but it came in a book-style cover, tied with ribbon, along with its leaflet. These were limited to 100 numbered, signed sets for €.40.00 Euro (+ postage). These went out of print in Spring 2018.

The current, 2nd Edition became available Summer 2018. It does not have the same matte cardstock (has a semi gloss finish instead) and is a bit smaller but is also more reasonably priced at €. 32.00 Euro + postage. So if you were wanting a Major Arcana set of this important historic deck for your collection at an affordable price this charming version might be a good choice. The back has the Tarot Museum Logo design (is reversible). The set of trumps comes tied with twine, in a sturdy gift box that helps protect the deck (see photo). The leaflet is also signed and numbered. This 2nd edition is limited to 200 sets.

This deck is such a delicate beauty and remains a favorite of collectors. The softly muted watercolors have an appealing vintage look. Back in the day, publishing houses that printed Tarot & playing cards in other parts of Italy would often describe their products as in the style of Bologna, indicating a high level of quality and 'bravura'. This reproduction of the 18th Century, Tarocchi di Bologna by Giacomo Zoni has the distinction of being reproduced in the historical province of Bologna where it was originally created!
