This is a quality, authentic reproduction of the full color, 78 card classic 'Tarocchi Italiano'
from Milan published by the well known printer Dotti, during 1845 and reproduced by Il Meneghello
(also of Milan) in this numbered edition of 2500 copies.
According to Osvaldo Menegazzi, Teodoro Dotti had a playing card factory which was in direct competition with Ferdinando Gumppenberg's factory at that time.
The well-known deck
Il Tarocco Soprafino
which was published by Gumppenberg (ca. 1835) came out first and there can be discovered many similarities between these decks.
It may be interesting to note that the beloved Irish poet
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)
had a copy of the Dotti deck and had scribbled upright and reverse meanings on
the cards.
You can visit the interactive collection of
Yeats's memorabilia online
or see a few of the cards from his personal Dotti deck in the display below (lower right).
